Sealing coatings

For certain applications (e.g. chocolate-coated snacks, ice-creams) the use of the so-called ‘cold-seals’ (i.e. seals obtained only by applying a pressure, but not heat) is mandatory to preserve the quality of the food, provided that direct contact with food is avoided due to legal restrictions.

This implies that such coatings are laid on the plastic substrate through the so-called ‘frame deposition’ (i.e. on the edge of the final package).

In our research, we have addressed both ‘safety’ and ‘process’ issues by developing a totally edible sealing coating, which can be applied on the whole surface of the plastic substrate as it can come in direct contact with food.
