My early academic research was conducted at the University of Sassari, where in 2003 I received the master degree (Summa cum Laude) in Agricultural Science and Technology. At that time, part of my studies was carried out at UPC Barcelona Tech University – College of Agricultural Engineering (ESAB) within the European interuniversities Erasmus project.

In 2007 I earned my PhD in Food and Microbial Biotechnology from the University of Sassari, focusing on different packaging strategies to extend the shelf-life of multi-domain foods, while actively working for the Food Packaging Lab led by Prof. Luciano Piergiovanni at the Food Science and Microbiology Department (DiSTAM) in the University of Milan. From April 2007 to May 2008 I was a postdoctoral scientist at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey – Department of Food Science, working in the Food Packaging Lab led by Prof. Kit Yam on the development of new films and coatings partially or totally obtained from renewable resources. During this stay, I developed fruitful collaborations with scientists at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) – Eastern Regional Research Center, Philadelphia.

From March 2011 to September 2011 I was a visiting scientist at KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (SWEDEN), in the Department of Fibre and Polymer Technology – Polymeric Materials Division, Prof. M. Hedenqvist’s Group. There, I had been working on the development of hybrid materials based on wheat gluten and silica by means of in-situ polymerization through the sol-gel approach.

At this moment I am Full Professor at the Department of Food, Environmental and Nutritional  Sciences (DeFENS) – University of Milan. My research focuses on the design and development of new high-performance materials using mainly biomacromolecules, by means of different approaches such as soft chemistry and nanotechnology. My research firstly deals with fundamental aspects to provide new suitable practical solutions, especially for the food packaging sector. This is accomplished by strong and fruitful collaborations with several industrial partners.
